SUMMARY: Contact tracing plays a vital role in public health responses to infectious and communicable diseases.  By tracing the contact, identifying sources of transmission, and controlling the spread of communicable diseases, the contact tracer will confirm individuals, obtain symptom information, refer contacts for testing, and provide instructions for further steps, such as quarantine.  For the COVID-19 response, a strong scalable network of Extra- Help Contact Tracers is needed to support patients with suspected or confirmed infection.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Gather information by interviewing to identify potential close contact of a confirmed infectious and communicable disease.
  2. Notify contact and promote self-monitoring through determined time provided by and in coordination with the Public Health Officer from the last known exposure to the confirmed case.
  3. Ensure that contacts who develop symptoms promptly isolate themselves and notify public health staff.
  4. Refer contact to their healthcare provider for medical advice, testing, and care as appropriate.
  5. Review information for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  6. Prepare case narratives, memos, correspondence, and other documentation.
  7. Assign risk category and understand protocol for each risk category.
  8. Work closely with a team to efficiently complete case investigations.
  9. Participate in regular program meetings and trainings such as weekly case reviews, communicable disease training, and others deemed necessary.
  10. Manage a full case load.
  11. Contact interview clients and representatives of businesses or government organizations for the purpose of varying facts.
  12. Determine the accuracy and completeness of all statements of facts completed by clients.
  13. Identity, analyze, and evaluate each variation of fact and substantiate pertinent information.
  14. Prepare written reports with recommendations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following; patient confidentiality, including the ability to conduct interviews without violating confidentiality. Interview techniques; record keeping principles. Federal, State, and local rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing privacy.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  High school graduate or equivalent and certificate of completion from a college or technical school; or two years of public contact experience with clients in an office setting, medical, financial, or eligibility environment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, regulations, and polices. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Ability to effectively apply interviewing and listening techniques.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Access to transportation, California driver’s license, and minimum auto insurance as required by law.
