Porterville Academic Classes

The William M. Maguy School of Education, a division of Proteus Inc., provides three key programs at their downtown Porterville location: Citizenship preparation classes, English as a Second Language (ESL), and High School Equivalency. All classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The classes are designed to meet the diverse needs of the Central Valley community. The citizenship program helps individuals prepare for naturalization, while the ESL classes support non-native English speakers in developing language proficiency. The High School Equivalency program assists adults in earning their educational credentials.

Understanding that many students are parents, Proteus Inc. provides free childcare during class sessions, removing a significant barrier to education access.

The Porterville classes are held at 54 N. Main Street, Suite 10, in downtown Porterville. The program is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), ensuring students receive quality instruction that meets established educational standards.

Proteus Success Story Yuliana Ortiz

When Yuliana Ortiz Uribe walked into the Proteus Porterville office, she brought with her determination, a heart full of hope, and a dream to create a better future for her three children. With a GED, a medical assisting certificate, and dependable childcare and transportation, she was ready to take the next step toward meaningful employment. She was paired with Employment Services Representative Viviana Ambrosio, and together, they got to work polishing her resume and exploring job opportunities.

Yuliana’s first opportunity came through a receptionist position at a hotel in Lindsay, offered as a 100-hour work experience. While it didn’t turn out to be the right fit, Yuliana never lost her drive. With Viviana’s continued encouragement, she stayed motivated and focused on what lay ahead.

That positivity paid off when a new opportunity opened up at Dr. Hasnain’s office for a temporary medical front office assistant. Yuliana applied, interviewed, and was hired at $16.50/hour. Her warm personality and eagerness to learn made an immediate impression. By the time the temporary assignment ended, Dr. Hasnain had seen enough—Yuliana was offered a permanent role on the team.

Today, Yuliana is thriving. She now earns $21.00/hour and says she finally feels at home, both professionally and personally. At our recent Advocacy Day event, Yuliana shared her inspiring journey as one of our featured speakers, reminding us all of the power of perseverance and the impact of having someone believe in you. We’re proud to have been part of her path to success!
